Aloha STAC (Aloha Special Technology
Access Center), incorporated in December of 1988, is a non-profit
grass root's effort networking people of all ages. The Board of
Directors are parents, individuals with disabilities, and
professionals. Our base organization is the Alliance for Technology Access
(ATA) of Albany, California founded in 1983 by Ms. Jacquelyn Brand
and her husband. Giving them access to Applelink (Apple's electronic
bulletin board) Apple Computer, Inc. played a significant part by
setting up a communication network to share new information. Their
daughter was born with cerebral palsy but through computers and
technology Brand gave her, then 11th grader, access to activities
typical of a young adult.
When Jackie setup the first center
that year, the object was to involve parents of kids with
disabilities, computer salespeople, educators and others interested
in finding new ways to use technology-then network it to people
needing access. Presently ATA is spread out over thirty-four states,
having forty six centers and numbering 95,000 people.
